What is TIPS?

  • TIPS employs teenagers in community service during the summer.
  • TIPS interns work in non-profit organizations across the Puget Sound area.

Why is TIPS a good choice for summer employment?

  • TIPS is a rewarding summer job.
  • TIPS internship participation is a valuable item on a resume or college application.
  • TIPS allows you to earn a paycheck and give back to your community at the same time.

Who should apply to be a TIPS intern?

  • TIPS is seeking high school students ages 15 -19 who are:
    • active leaders among their peers
    • interested in community service.
    • hardworking and dependable.
    • who are15 years old  by June 1, 2012.

Do you have to live in the Seattle area to apply for TIPS?

  • No, but you must be in Greater Puget Sound Area for the course of the summer internship program.

How do I apply to TIPS?

  • You can apply on-line here or download a PDF or Word version of our application and mail it to TIPS.  Applications are also available at many area high schools and at our office. Contact your career counselor or Key Club Advisor for more information.
  • You will need two letters of recommendation.  Instructions for letters of recommendations are also listed here.
  • Application and two letters of recommendation are due on March 23, 2012 at 5:00 pm. Late applications will not be accepted.

How will TIPS select its employees?

  • Each potential intern must:
    • fill out an application.
    • have 2 letters of recommendation submitted on his/her behalf.
    • complete an interview (if selected for an interview).
    • have a high interest in serving their community (although no previous volunteering is required)

Can you the intern select their placement?

  • No, you can indicate “Areas of Interest” on your application but TIPS places you at selected non-profit organizations.

What is required of TIPS interns?

  • Each intern will commit to a schedule of either 20 hours or 30 hours per week for 6 to 8 weeks and 5 of those weeks must be consecutive.
  • TIPS interns are committed, punctual and enthusiastic about community involvement.
  • You MUST attend 4 mandatory trainings
    • TIPS orientation-Monday, June 4, 2012, for 21/2 hours in the evening-
    • Leadership Training— Saturday, July 14, 2012 (1/2 day)
    • Day of Service—Saturday, August 4, 2012
    • Celebration of Service— Thursday, August 16, 2012 (evening)

When will the TIPS program start?

  • Most internships begin the week of June 25, 2012.
  • Most internships end the Friday, August 17, 2012.

How much do TIPS interns get paid?

  • TIPS interns are paid Washington State minimum wage- In 2012 minimum wage is set for $9.04 per hour.  Questions:  email us at tips@teensinpublicservice.org

Does TIPS offer internships during the school year?

  • No, but we can refer you to places to volunteer during the school year.

Does TIPS offer internships for college students?

  • No, but the AmeriCorps program does have opportunities available to college age students.

How do non-profit organizations apply for a TIPS intern?

  • TIPS is always interested in working with new non-profit organizations that can develop a clear job description for a teen intern which includes engaging and important work for the organization.
